The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters hacked out a hard-fought 105-101 overtime victory over Barangay Ginebra San Miguel on Sunday at SMART-Araneta Coliseum to secure the No. 4 seed in the PLDT Home TVolution Commissioner’s Cup playoffs.

“We got the stop we needed in the endgame,” said Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao.

But the Elasto Painters will have little time for celebration as they will embark on their best-of-three quarterfinals series against the fifth seed Meralco Bolts on Monday at 5:45 p.m.

The Gin Kings, meanwhile, were relegated to the No. 8 spot, where they will have twice-to-win disadvantage against unbeaten top seed Talk ‘N Text in their quarters series.

“This is where we wanted to be. We only wanted to be in the quarters on an even matchup without any disadvatage, and we got it,” said Guiao.

Rain or Shine had to withstand a fiery start from Ginebra, who took a double-digit first half lead behind tremendous energy from debuting reinforcement Gabe Freeman. The two-time Best Import winner scored 17 points in the first period before finishing with 23 at the half.

But the Elasto Painters came out with renewed energy in the second half, shutting down Freeman and turning the game into a dogfight the rest of the way.

Greg Slaughter gave Ginebra its final taste of the lead with a tough shot over Rain or Shine import Wayne Chism, 94-92, with less than two minutes remaining.

A couple of plays later, Beau Belga nailed two free throws to tie the game with 45.3 seconds left.

The Elasto Painters foiled Freeman’s attempt in the ensuing play, but Ginebra recovered the offensive rebound. Freeman again missed on a drive to the basket, but Slaughter was fouled on the rebound play with 8.3 seconds remaining.

The 7-foot rookie center missed both free throws, but Rain or Shine threw the ball away after not calling timeout.

Chism and Paul Lee set the tone by scoring the first four points in overtime as the Elasto Painters wrapped up the win.

The Rain or Shine import finished with 30 points, while Lee added 25 for Rain or Shine.

“The win gives us a lot of confidence because lots of people are doubting our import. Only me and the team believe in him,” said Guiao of Chism, who scored just six points in Rain or Shine’s previous game.

Freeman, hounded by Gabe Norwood in the second half and the extra period, finished with 29 points. He scored just two points in overtime, on a jumper with 6.6 seconds left.

“Gabe Freeman was a matchup problem as expected. Chism showed what he can do. Glad the locals stepped up,” said Guiao.

The scores:

Rain or Shine 105 — Chism 30, Lee 25, Belga 10, Cruz 10, Arana 8, Norwood 7, Chan 6, Nuyles 3, Teng 3, Ibanes 3, Almazan 0, Tiu 0, Tang 0, Rodriuguez 0.
