The former NBA player arrived in the country earlier in the morning as a replacement for the incumbent Leon Rodgers.
Powell won two NBA titles with the Los Angeles Lakers and also spent time with the Dallas Mavericks, Indiana Pacers, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers, and the Atlanta Hawks.
He said he couldn’t help but compare Ginebra, the league’s crowd darlings, to being on the Lakers.
Like fans of the popular NBA team, Ginebra diehards are passionate, according to Powell. Already, he has received tons of messages from Gin Kings faithful over social media expressing their support for him.
Powell promises to bring defensive intensity and energy to Ginebra, who has three games left in the elimination round after starting the tournament with a 2-4 record.
Ginebra high-flyer Chris Ellis was impressed by Powell’s performance in their first practice together. The reigning PBA slam dunk King is hopeful that Powell can provide rebounding and defense for the struggling squad.
Ellis added that Powell’s experience, both in the NBA and in China, can also boost the team, which is hoping to avoid early elimination in the conference.
