Former Ginebra star Rudy Distrito hits out at current Kings players, coaches: 'Hindi ba sila nahihiya sa mga fans?'
Former Ginebra star Rudy Distrito says he feels the pain of the team's diehard fans.

FORMER PBA star Rudy Distrito has lashed out at the current Barangay Ginebra team, saying the present crop of players and coaches have completely lost touch with the never-say-die spirit that made the ballclub the crowd darling that it is today.

Hindi ganun ang Ginebra," the former Ginebra guard said on Tuesday in a rare interview granted to Spin.ph.

Distrito, best remembered for hitting the late Game Seven winner that completed Ginebra's historic fightback from a 1-3 finals deficit against Shell in the 1991 PBA First Conference, said he spoke out because he could no longer bear watching the team's struggles the past two conferences.

The former PBA guard said he has also been deluged with email and Facebook messages from fans who continue to lament the decline of the proud franchise.

“Buti nga tumawag ka. Kasi naiinis na ako. Nasasaktan na ako sa nangyayari sa Ginebra,” said Distrito, who is now based in his native Bacolod City after serving time in a Las Vegas jail.

Although long retired, Distrito said he remained attached to Ginebra because he feels he has a stake in the team.

Distrito, 55, said he couldn't understand how a Ginebra team loaded with talent in every position can continue to fall short in a title drought now stretching six seasons.

“Ang lakas ng team nila. May malalaki, may (Greg) Slaughter, may (Japeth) Aguilar, may mga magagaling na point guarda na nasa national team pa, may rebounder, may shooter,” he said. Kailangan pa ba nating idagdag si (US President Barack) Obama?”

The former league enforcer said what he couldn't stand was seeing the team go down without a fight.

Distrito also hit out at what he said was the "chaotic" coaching setup of the current Ginebra team.

“Ang coaching staff nila ang gulo. Magulo sila eh.

Distrito said he now finds more parallels between the Ginebra of old and Rain or Shine, which, he said, is a rag-tag team that continues to win because of the fighting spirit embodied by both the players and its coach.

Pati head coach nila si Yeng Guiao, kasali sa gulo,” he said.

“Si Yeng Guiao, style Jaworski siya eh. Pati siya involved sa kung ano nangyayari sa laro, pinagtatanggol niya players niya,” he said.
